KAL—Knowledge, Action, Learning

For an organization to be healthy and sustainable in today's environment, it must maintain alignment among mission, organizational capacity, and capital.

Fieldstone Alliance and Nonprofit Finance Fund, with the generous support of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, worked together as partners to develop a package of services to help nonprofit organizations grow in a way that maintains this balance. KAL began as a Fieldstone Alliance demonstration project. It was initiated in June 2006, by a $9.3 million, three year grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation (WKKF) to develop the capacity and financial acumen of W.K. Kellogg Foundation grantees.

About the Original KAL Project

What are the goals of KAL?
  • To improve the overall performance, effectiveness, and financial sustainability of U.S.-based W.K. Kellogg Foundation grantees
  • To use the knowledge created in that work to leverage learning about effectiveness and make improvements in performance throughout the nonprofit sector

Who is eligible to participate?

  • KAL is designed for U. S. based W.K. Kellogg Foundation grantees
  • It is important that a participant’s grant be active sometime between January 1, 2007 and August 31, 2009
  • If your organization fits both of these criteria, you are eligible to apply

Who are the providers of services?

What are the key benefits of KAL?
Participating organizations may qualify for some or all of these benefits.

  • $750 for resources. Participants with annual operating budgets below $1 million receive $750 to purchase resources (books, conference registration fees, memberships, online resources, subscriptions, etc.) when they complete their registration forms.
  • Financial support to attend convenings (in-person trainings or webinars on organizational capacity sponsored by KAL).  There is no registration fee for convenings. All organizations may register for two convenings on two different topics, per calendar year. Registered KAL organizations with annual operating budgets of:
    • $1 million or less will receive a stipend of up to $300 per person for two staff or board members to attend a convening.
    • Over $1 million will receive a stipend of up to $300 per person for one staff or board member to attend a convening.
  • Financial support for consultations (organizational assessments, strategic planning, financial analysis, business planning, referrals for financing and capital resources). Participants may apply for a consultation (application available on the KAL participant-only web site). After a screening process with KAL staff, participants may be awarded financial support for an agreed upon consultation. Upon award of a consultation, grantees will be asked to pay either $500 (organizations with operating budgets under $1 million) or $1500 (organizations with operating budgets over $1 millions). KAL will pay the remainder of the cost of the consultation.
